The Festival

The Brazilian Film Festival of Toronto ® - BRAFFTv (Brazilian Film & TV Festival of Toronto) features in its competitive program Brazilian films and co-productions, to show Canadians the best recent productions of Brazilian cinema. The Festival also features a non-competitive program, films made by Brazilian filmmakers living abroad, and foreign films about Brazil.

Production:

The Festival is produced by Puente (Brazil) and Southern Mirrors (Canada), with support from the Institute CEFAC and Brazil Institute.

Date and Location:

The Festival is held from October 16 to October 20, 2013, at TIFF Bell Lightbox and Carlton Cinema in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Types of films you can submit:

Short-films up to 15 minutes
Mid-length - a film of 16 to 69 minutes
Feature films - over 70 minutes

What can be submitted:

Films of all kinds, without distinction.
Filmmakers may submit more than one cinematographic work.

Categories:

Competitive Program- Competitive films made in Brazil by Brazilians or co-productions, all launched or completed in the last two years

Non-Competitive Program - Films not competing for the Golden Mapple Award
Brah-zoo-kah - films made by Brazilians abroad
Brazil Seen Through Other Eyes - films made by foreigners about Brazil

Language:

All submitted films shall have English subtitles.
Animated films for children under seven (7) years of age must be dubbed in English.

Participant’s responsibility

Entries are free of charge and are open until July 25, 2013, at 11:59 pm (Eastern Time) through this website registration form – please see link at the end of this Notice.

Submission for the Competitive Program

Films entered for the Competitive Program will necessarily:
1. have been launched or completed in the last two years;
2. be subtitled in English;
2.1 if English-language films, must be subtitled in Portuguese;
3. only subtitled films and delivered in DVD will be accepted;
4. promotional material as trailers, photos, press releases and posters can be sent along with the film;
5. if the online submission form is successfully received, the responsible person will receive an email confirmation with a copy of the Registration Form;
5.1 a copy of this Submission Form must be printed, signed and placed in an envelope along with two copies of the movie in DVD. Send the envelope to:

6. Only envelopes postmarked by July 29th, 2013 (date on the envelope) will be accepted;

Films submitted for the Non-Competitive Program, Brazil Seen Through Other Eyes, and Brah-zoo-kah will necessarily:
1. be subtitled in English;
1.2. if English-language films, must be subtitled in Portuguese;
2. only subtitled films and delivered in DVD will be accepted;
3. promotional material as trailers, photos, press releases and posters can be sent along with the film;

Legal Issues

1. The submission of material (DVDs and publicity material) to BRAFFTV in Sao Paulo is the responsibility of the director/producer. The Festival does not cover any shipping costs or fees.
2. By clicking "I agree with all regulations of the Brazilian Film & TV Festival of Toronto," the person responsible for the registration of the film at BRAFFTV 2013 states that:
2.1 he/she owns all rights to screening, including the soundtrack, related rights and archival footage, not violating any intellectual property rights of third parties, taking the sole responsibility of legal work as a whole.
2.2 he/she is aware that the Festival does not assume payment of screening fees of selected films and, if the distributor wants to receive any payment it, the person responsible for registering the film will exempt BRAFFTV from any charges.
2.3 The participant cannot screen the film in Toronto, Ontario for a period of 25 days before the Festival date.
3. In the selection phase, the Festival is not responsible for DVDs with questionable quality and / or does not run on all types of devices. If the film has been entered in a timely manner, the production may call and ask for a new copy.
4. The Festival is not responsible for any damage or loss of material sent by mail.
5. The films submitted for selection, as well as the advertising material will not be returned and will become part of the Festival's archives; it will be available after the Festival, at the Festival Cinematheque, for free closed consultation only.

Organizers’ responsibilities

A - Selection
1. The Selection Committee will select the films to be screened at the Festival.
2. There is no minimum or maximum number of films to be screened at the Festival.
3. The announcement of selected films will take place on August 20 2013 at brafftv.com.
4. Production reserves the right to use up to 1' to publicize the film.
5. The selected films will be displayed according to the program prepared by the Festival.

B - Sending the film copies
1. BRAFFTV takes responsibility for sending copies (Blu-ray or DCP) in the stretch São Paulo - Toronto - Sao Paulo.
1.1 After the arrival of the copies in Sao Paulo, the Festival staff will be responsible for returning them to the production company responsible for registration, provided it is located within the national territory.

C - Voting
1) A committee of five (5) Canadian jurors will evaluate the films in the categories below:
Best Documentary
Best Picture (Feature / Short/Mid-length)
Best Director (Feature/ Short/Mid-length)
Best Actor (Feature / Short/Mid-length)
Best Actress (Feature / Short/Mid-length)
2) the audience will vote at the end of each session for the Audience Choice Award.
2.1 patrons vote by giving the film a rating from 1 to 5, with 1 being the lowest score and 5 the highest score. In the event of a tie, the tiebreaker will be the movie that has obtained the highest percentage of votes rated 4. In case of further tie, the tiebreaker will be given to the highest percentage of votes rated 3 and so on.
2.2 The polls are held by the organizers and the votes are counted by the Executive Producer.

Awards

The winners will receive:
a) Golden Maple Award, created by the designer Nilson J. dos Santos (Ponto e Letra).
b) Certificate

Responsibility of the Selected Productions

1. Copies of the selected films - English-subtitled - should be sent to BRAFFTV (Samia R. Haddad, 111, 6C -CEP - Sao Paulo, SP, A / C Patricia Queiroz) in Blu-ray or DCP, along with two backup copies on DVD WITHOUT WATERMARK. The three copies should be "plug and play" (ready to display without menu). Failure to observe these requirements will mean the disqualification of the film.
2. The deadline for accepting copies as described in item 1 is no later than September 12, 2013. Copies received after this date will be subject to disqualification. Sending copies to BRAFFTV in Sao Paulo is the sole responsibility of the director / producer.
3. Once the selected films are announced in the Brazilian and Canadian media, the director may not withdraw the film from the Festival.

EXCEPTIONS AND CONDITIONS NOT PROVIDED

The Festival Coordination will resolve possible questions and make decisions on issues not found in the present Announcement.
If in doubt, at any time during the production and/or running of the Festival, the Festival Board shall, at its sole discretion, decide on the case.
The inclusion of any work in the festival implies full and unreserved acceptance of these Rules.
